Journey through Middle-earth: Lord of the Rings filming locations in and around Wellington

If you're here it's because, like me, you can't help but get excited every time you hear Howard Shore's music or see Gandalf enter the Shire saying: “A magician is never late…”Well, brace yourself, because I've been to New Zealand, I've scoured every corner of Wellington and the surrounding area looking for Lord of the Rings locations, and now I'm here to tell you ALL about it. Just like that.

I've scouted locations using Google Maps, compared frames with real-life landscapes, taken photos in the "Legolas pose," and even eaten like a hobbit. Exaggerated? Maybe. Unforgettable? Also.

Upon arrival: the airport and the first nod to Middle Earth

Even before jet lag hits, you're already in Tolkien's universe. At Wellington International Airport, Smaug hangs from the ceiling, enormous, his red eyes fixed on you as if to say, "Yes, stranger, you have arrived in my land." The eagles from The Hobbit also used to fly over the airport, but they were removed in April 2025 (just after our trip).

Mount Victoria: Nazgûl, Hobbits, and an Epic Journey Through Middle-earth

Mount Victoria is the place If you're a Lord of the Rings fan and you're in Wellington, this urban park is literally 15-20 minutes from the city center and a direct gateway to Middle-earth.

Many key scenes were filmed here, especially in The Fellowship of the Ring films, and although the forest has changed somewhat over the years, it still retains that magical atmosphere. In fact, most of the "Shire + Danger" scenes were filmed here. I'll tell you everything you can't miss.

The Hiding Place of the Nazgûl

The most iconic scene from Mount Victoria. Frodo notices something's wrong, steps off the path, and immediately afterward, the other hobbits appear running. They all throw themselves under a tree, and the Nazgûl approaches, sniffing the air. INCREDIBLE.

How to find it:

  • Find the path “Hobbit's Hideaway”. It literally has that name, and is marked with signs.

  • The root under which they hide is there, a little more eroded, but recognizable.

  • There are fans who leave pebbles, flowers, or even mini rings as a tribute.

The descent into the forest with the hobbits running

Just before the hiding place, there's a scene where the hobbits run down a narrow path between leaning trees, shouting "Out of the path!" That path is still intact.

How to find it:

  • Depart from the top lookout on Mount Vic and take the circular trail that runs around the mountain.

  • Look at the tall, crooked trees, because they are super recognizable.

  • Some fans have pointed out the exact spot on Google Maps as “Frodo path”.

Frodo's tree reading his book

A peaceful scene, before the action begins. Frodo sits on the hillside, reading and smoking a pipe. The peace of the Shire is in the air.

How to get there:

  • From the Nazgûl hideout, continue climbing towards the summit of Mount Vic.

  • The composition fits the film's shot. There's no sign, but when you see it, you feel it.

The road where Gandalf enters Hobbiton (surprise!)

Although many believe this was filmed in Matamata (the Shire), there's a brief opening shot of Gandalf in his chariot descending a narrow path through the trees. That shot was also shot here, with a low-angle camera, on Mount Victoria.

🎥 Geek detail: It was a filler scene they shot with a second unit. The road was chosen for its curves and the density of the forest.

It's a site where key scenes were filmed: Elrond's farewell to the Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo looking out from the balcony after being wounded by a Nazgûl, and even Aragorn and Arwen's iconic kiss.

Walking through the elven forest

The park is an ancient, humid forest, with native trees that look straight out of Middle Earth: giant rimu, northern rātā, and beech trees that dominate the sky. As you walk along the trails, you are surrounded by the songs of native birds: playful kākā, yellow-crowned parakeets, chatty tūī, and curious pīwakawaka hopping from branch to branch.

Geek tip: Put on your headphones with the Howard Shore soundtrack and suddenly you're not in New Zealand... you're walking through Rivendell.

Pakuratahi and Hutt Rivers: The Magic of Water

The crystal clear rivers Pakuratahi and Hutt were the reason they chose this location for Rivendell. The shots of the river, the reflections, and the color of the water help recreate that mystical atmosphere.

Geek tip: Cross the swing bridge over the Hutt River and look down. It's the same river seen in the film. A shot from here with a drone or small camera can create an incredible cinematic effect.
