Czech Republic

Planning a trip to the Czech Republic? 🇨🇿

Get ready to enter a medieval tale with a touch of role-playing video game! 🏰 Because if there is a country that seems taken from a game of The Witcher, is this.

The Czech Republic is a destination where history, beer, Gothic architecture, and legends blend with an unexpected vibe. Here you can walk through royal castles, meet a golem in an ancient synagogue, or eat a spiral cake while gazing at an astronomical clock that seems to possess ancient magic.

And yes, Prague is beautiful. But this country goes much further: forests that look like they came from The Lord of the Rings, towns where you could film a movie Harry Potter, and beer… A LOT of beer (spoiler: the best in the world, fight me 🍻).

It was like being inside a book, but with cheap trains and no dragons (although there are statues of them, mind you). I hope this guide helps you live your own epic adventure!

WHAT AWAITS YOU IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

🗣 LanguageThe official language is Czech. In tourist-heavy areas like Prague, Kutná Hora, or Cesky Krumlov, many people speak English, especially in hotels, restaurants, and museums. But outside of these places, English isn't as common. Using a translation app (or learning a few basic Czech phrases) can get you out of a tight spot, and they love it when you make the effort!

💰 Currency: Although it is part of the EU, the Czech Republic does not use the euro, but the Czech koruna (CZK or Kč). There are banknotes in denominations of 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 kroner. You can pay by card almost everywhere, even in markets and small cafes. Still, bring some cash for public restrooms or more rural areas.

🍽️ TraditionsThey're very punctual, fairly easy-going, and have a charmingly dry sense of humor. Lunch is early, dinner is early, and beer is almost cheaper than water! It's not customary to tip big, but it's common to round up the bill or leave between 5% and 10%. Oh, and if you see someone toasting with a "Na zdraví!" (Cheers!), don't be surprised if they look you in the eye while doing so: it's tradition!

🔌 PlugThe voltage is 230V and the plugs are type C and E, the same as in Spain. So if you're coming from Europe, you don't need an adapter.

📱Internet: Having an internet connection in Australia is practically indispensable to fully enjoy your trip. eSIM The best option, it will give you peace of mind and you won't have to rely on public networks. Plus, reserving them in advance can save you money and hassle. You can purchase your eSIM card here either here.

MUST-SEE AND DO SIGHTS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

🏰 Prague Castle: The ultimate epic symbol. Think of an RPG hero's base of operations, with walls, towers, cathedrals, and an alleyway straight out of a fantasy novel. Don't miss the changing of the guard and the views from above.

Prague Astronomical ClockThis medieval clock has been in operation since the 15th century, and when it strikes the hour, the animated figures put on a mini show. It's like watching a live Easter egg—a gem of ancient engineering and magic!

☠️ Bone Church in Kutná HoraA dark and fascinating place that looks like something out of a Tim Burton film or a gothic video game. Thousands of human bones decorate the interior. Ideal for lovers of the macabre and mysterious.

🍺 Czech Beer RouteCzech beer is the best in the world and deserves its own ritual. Visit the Pilsner Urquell brewery, try craft beers with names that sound like dragons, and toast with a hearty "Na zdraví!"

🌳 Bohemian Switzerland National ParkIf you like nature with a touch of fantasy, this park with unique rock formations will transport you straight to an adventure game map. Perfect for hikes and epic photos.

🎠 Cesky KrumlovA small medieval village that looks like a fantasy film set or a role-playing game. Cobblestone streets, a castle, and a meandering river—a place to lose yourself and daydream.

WHEN TO TRAVEL TO THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Here are the weather levels:

  • SpringIdeal if you want pleasant weather and flower-filled forests. The light at sunset looks like CGI.

  • Summer: Everything is open, there's a great atmosphere and festivals (some are geeky!). But there are also lots of tourists, so turn on stealth mode.

  • AutumnMy favorite season. Epic colors, perfect weather for layering (literally or figuratively), and fewer crowds.

  • Winter: Polar cold, but if you like that vibe Frozen + Christmas markets + snowy castles… it's your time.

🎮 DREAMER ADVICEAvoid Czech school holidays (Christmas, Easter, or July/August), as prices rise and everything gets crowded. Consult the official holiday calendar as if you were planning a raid: strategy is key.
