How to organize a road trip through Tasmania

WHAT YOU WILL FIND IN THIS POST

Every corner of Tasmania blew us away. Although sparsely populated, it is rich in wildlife and has some of the friendliest people we have ever met.  Our personal opinion is that if you come to Australia, taking a road trip through Tasmania should be a Must on your list and we hope you find this guide for your next trip to Tasmania super useful.

WHERE IS TASMANIA?

Tasmania is a small island situated between mainland Australia and New Zealand in the South Sea. Tasmania’s unique location plays a major role in almost everything that makes it special, from its capricious climate to the fascinating animals that roam its national parks to its famous white wines. Of course, its location has also influenced its history.

Tasmania has made the most of its thousands of years of isolation to provide itself with a wide variety of animals and vegetation. The Tasmanian Devil, found only in Tasmania, tops the list of wild animals. Sadly, the Tasmanian devil population is facing the spread of a nasty disease called Devil Fascial Tumour Disease (DFTD). The Tasmanian Government has stepped up to the plate and developed several programs to protect the island's mascot.

Roadtrip through Tasmania: PREPARATIONS

Climate

How to get to Tasmania

Tasmania is located approximately 250km from the mainland, across the Bass Strait. Most visitors arrive by air and the most commonly used airport is Hobart. We always look for flights via Skyscanner and we buy the one that best suits our budget, schedules, airlines... If you arrive by plane, you can rent your van, pay online before your trip, and pick up the car keys at the Hobart airport terminal upon arrival.
If you want to do a road trip through Tasmania with your own van like us, the ferry Spirit of Tasmania between Geelong and Devonport will be your transport. Make sure you get your car and van checked before you travel to Tasmania. The engine will have to work hard to get up the hills and the brakes will have to work overtime to get down the steep sections of hills.

Between September and April there are also day trips. They leave in the morning and arrive at their destination in the afternoon. These day trips are cheaper than the overnight trips as you can travel without a seat or assigned cabin. If you have a furry family member who will accompany you on your Tasmanian Roadtrip like we did, you will also need to get a ticket with a carrier (located in one part of the boat) in which your pet will spend the duration of the trip.

The price varies depending on the dates, and during high season the prices tend to be higher. We started our road trip in mid-February and the price was around $908. The journey is very easy, as the ferry is very spacious and clean. However, the Wi-Fi is paid, but you can always watch your favorite series or anime on your laptop.

Point to note: Do you get seasick? If so, be sure to stock up on motion sickness medication.

Don't make a big purchase before you leave

As when entering Australia, You can't bring vegetables or meat into Tasmania. Before boarding the ferry, your car will be checked to ensure that you leave any products you cannot bring with you, so we recommend that you do not take any vegetables or meat with you. All the information on biosecurity in Tasmania here.

Once in Devonport, there is a Woolworths and a Coles (typical Australian supermarkets) to stock up on all the fresh produce and provisions you need.

pase

A valid pass is required to enter all of Tasmania's national parks. The money raised is reinvested and goes directly towards maintaining the parks and reserves.

Visitors can purchase passes per vehicle or per person if they arrive by bus, motorcycle, bicycle or on foot.

There are different car passes, from one day, two months and even one year. We opted for the annual one as we live a stone's throw from Tasmania, for a three-week Roadtrip through Tasmania like ours, the best thing is to buy the 2-month one, which includes Cradle Mountain. This pass costs $82.40 and can accommodate up to 5 people in the van. You put a sticker on the car window and you will also have a small card.

Here You have all the information about the passes.

Planning- Routes by Days

A very important task on any trip, and especially on a road trip through Tasmania lasting so many days, is to plan by day. To organize our route we usually read many travel journals and blogs, we look for all the official websites of the national parks so that we don't miss anything.

Accommodation

There is plenty of free camping in Tasmania, in the most epic and stunning destinations, you will find that you will be self-sufficient most of the time.

On our road trip through Tasmania, as on all those we do in Australia, we used apps a lot.

There are also some campsites located within natural parks and you have to book them online in advance on the government websites. We will show you what we used in the post of The Best Campsites in Tasmania.

Visa

Spaniards do not need a visa to enter if they are staying for less than 90 days. All you need is a valid passport. If you are of another nationality, you can obtain information at the Embassy of your country.

And of course, if you are studying in australia With a student visa, no matter your nationality, on your vacation, what better way to enjoy the country than to take a Roadtrip through Tasmania!

Electricity

In Tasmania, as in the rest of Australia, the common voltage is 230 V, so, as a general rule, the appliances you use at home will work just as well if you travel to Australia.
