The CV in Australia, commonly called a “Resume” is focused on a single area of search and this is one of the differences between European and Australian CVs. Let’s say you are looking for a job as an administrator, but you have also worked as a waiter during the summer season. In your CV, you will include only the work experience related to the position you are seeking.
PERSONAL DATA
One of the differences between European and Australian CVs is that in Australia it is preferable not to attach any photos or even indicate the date of birth, both considered discriminatory elements in the selection of the candidate. You should only give your name, surname, address and telephone number in clear letters at the top. You can also indicate the type of visa you have, although in some cases it is better to omit it, but do so explicitly only in case you are contacted.
EXPERIENCE
List your professional experience, starting with the most recent, including the name of the employer, the length of time you have worked, where you have worked, your job title and your qualifications. Try to be clear and concise, use a bulleted list to indicate different experiences, and choose the words you use carefully.
SKILLS
No Australian CV is complete without a list of skills. Following your work experience, I recommend that you include a list of your main “skills”. If you have several, you must distinguish between technical skills, such as the ability to use graphics programs, the Office suite or programming languages, and so-called “soft skills”, i.e. problem solving, flexibility, the ability to work in a team, creativity and organisation.
Remember not to exaggerate the figure, but rather evaluate what really makes you suitable for the position you are seeking.
As you can see, there are several differences between European and Australian CVs, but don't worry, it's very simple once you get down to it!
