Byron Bay is a coastal municipality in the state of New South Wales, in southeastern Australia and belongs to the region of the Northern RiversIf what you are looking for is a place Hippie par excellence, calm and friendly, Byron Bay is your city.  Its population is approximately 10 thousand inhabitants, tyou will have the beach at your feet and urban art in every corner.

Hippie Spirit

Nimbin, in the hills west of Byron Bay, celebrates a free-spirited, alternative existence, with its roots dating back to the 1973 Aquarius Festival.

Be careful, it burns

Byron Bay is part of the erosion caldera of an ancient volcano, the Tweed Volcano, which erupted 23 million years ago.

World Heritage Site

Julian Rocks is a sacred landmark and part of Bundjalung folklore. It is said that when 'Nguthungulli' (Father of the World) was fleeing the mainland with his married mistress in a canoe, her husband attacked them with a spear but missed. The two rocks represent the ends of the sinking canoe.

"The Wreck"

Carrying butter, bananas and bacon as cargo, the SS Wollongbar ran aground in 1921. Danny Wills, a retired professional surfer and descendant of one of the crew members, learned to surf on the sandbank created by the wreck.

An "art tower"

In 1987, local artist Ian Walker donated a year of his time and expertise to paint the water tower on Patterson Hill. Much of the artwork can still be seen at the top of the tower.

"Firing" logs

The logging industry is why the word 'shoot' is used in many local names - Possum Shoot, Coopers Shoot and Skinners Shoot - where lumberjacks would 'shoot' logs over the hills to take to ships.

Lighthouse

Byron Bay Lighthouse was built in 1901 and is the easternmost point on the Australian mainland.

Surfers

Surfers arrived in the 1960s, drawn by the waves at The Pass and Wategos, and everyone else followed.
